Interview with: Fran Ledger
Length: 5 minutes, 25 seconds
Summary: Fran talks about how VIA LINK, her previous employer, received many emergency phone calls after Katrina. The trials of landlords and apartment/house searches. And a bit of happiness: falling in love. Yay!
Notes: I’m going to avoid shooting interviews indoors because my camera doesn’t do so well in that light. I could set up my own lights, but that’s pretty darn intrusive, so I’d rather not go that route. I need to get better at following up with questions based on what was just said. Like I wish I would have followed up on the 211 stuff more. I gotta get better at that. Plus, I need more questions at my fingertips. It turned out to be 5 minutes so I guess it was okay to end it when I did.

Great job! What a wonderful idea. I will check back often to see who else turns up.

Most of your interviews so far seem to be of white middle-class people. They have suffered some.
I think you should find really tragic stories of people of any color that lost their houses, their loved ones, their pets, their wedding photos, etc.
Maybe those people are still stranded or relocated since they have nothing to return to.
Find people still living without electricity and show us what that is like in this day and age…or those that moved back in against warnings that their house was not safe, etc.

We have all suffered somehow because of this storm. It looks like Simon’s getting his feet wet at interviewing people around him and who’ve sustained some losses, before he gets out there into some pretty heavy stuff. It’s tricky.
This kind of filmmaking can be a very intrusive and voyeuristic business and I think it best that the interviewer be very comfortable doing what he does so as not to set his subject at unease. Especially when it comes to talking to people about tragic stories of people of any color that lost their houses, their loved ones, their pets, their wedding photos, etc.
