Wow, evacuating from Kuwait. It would be interesting to know exactly how that happened. Was there news of the Iraqis advancing? So everyone tried to jump on the closest air transport or what?
…on May 20th, 2006, at 1:24 pmActually, Iraqi troop buildup at the border was quite evident to those who paid attention (I.e. read the news, talked to other people, etc.). Some who had advance warning (and a LOT of money) did manage to escape before and during the invasion.
My mom and I left for India on a month-long vacation a week before the invasion. My father, however, was on the last British Airways flight that didn’t make it out. He was a hostage of the Iraqis for a month.
My aunt, uncle, cousin and hordes of friends had to leave by caravan through the deserts of Iraq and Jordan. Some didn’t make it or got really ill. It’s a long story that I’ll write about on my blog some day after having that 16-year-long-overdue interview with my dad.
